伊什塔尔是巴比伦神话中掌握著繁殖、爱、性和战争的女神，众多男人为她倾倒但是她非常冷漠和暴虐。她下到冥界的传说，隐喻著月亮，四季流转、冬季的万物消亡。

每个女性其实都有其破坏性的一面，就像是月亮的暗面。但是巴比伦神话中，这个女神的形象尤为特殊，与中西传统文化所想象的，或柔情似水，或优柔寡断，或乐于牺牲奉献的母亲形象截然不同，Ishtar作为一个大母神，有著正常人的爱恨和冷酷。这巨大的浮动和不一致性，有可能才是生命之源，而不是我们所想象的包容、隐忍、勤勉、谦卑和关爱。
