The first light of day
filtered through hillside trees
settles upon the canal
with shimmering, animated panache.

Village women, old and young,
with baskets full of laundry
trek the still-dark streets
to reach the rocky canal bank.

Arms rise … then fall,
pounding the day’s wash with clubs,
with a cadence suggestive
of mountain songs sung in turn.

Lost in conversation.
Past sorrows revealed,
listening in rapt attention;
Past acclaim boasted,
boistrously spooking birds from their perch;
Funny stories shared,
sending all into gales of laughter.
Village gossip, shared with all,
every bit … large and small.

Laundry knows no seasons.
In the depths of winter,
with legs planted in the icy flow
and no relief from frosty winds,
some still manage to sing as they work.

Winter gives way to the flowers of spring.
Sister yearns to wed, but dares not say;
Brother seeks a bride, but words fade to grey.
Mountains sing to condole with distant peaks.
