Waizaiwai, meaning “vine” in Kavalan, is the name of a Kavalan community. Located in Luodong, Yilan, Waizaiwai Bridge crosses a river where silver grass comes into full bloom on the riverbed in autumn. This love poem uses the various images of water as a metaphor to portray the subtlety of human emotions, which may seem calm but are stormy beneath the surface. Human emotions may be gentle, magnificent, and flexible sometimes but extremely adamant, firm, and overpowering at other times. The romantic feelings two people have for each other can be interpreted as the process of how people in Yilan feel constantly evoked by their land and grow attached to it. In this piece, the unique glides of the reed sheng create a sense of softness and quietude in the flow of melodies.
